Be Happy - I CAN DO IT Conference - Hay House

I am currently in San Diego with my wife Hollie, daughter Bo, and sister-in-law Lizzie Prior. San Diego is beautiful. I have spent the week doing media interviews and giving talks locally.  This weekend I will give a 90-minute interactive workshop on my new book Be Happy at the Hay House I CAN DO IT! conference, which runs from April 30th to May 3rd.

I CAN DO IT! Conferences, hosted by Hay House Inc, are truly inspiring events.  Last year, I was fortunate enough to give keynote speeches at both the Las Vegas I CAN DO IT! and the Tampa I CAN DO IT! conferences.  This weekend, in San Diego, there will be a great list of authors including Louise Hay, Marianne Williamson, Wayne Dyer, and Thomas Moore.  If you can make it, do come.  If not, I would check out the Conference CDs that will be available on the Hay House website.

The picture is of me with Louise Hay, in Tampa.  Louise has just done my make-up.   She wanted me to look my best for my audience. Not many people can claim that Louise Hay is their make-up artist!

Everyday Abundance: "A Rich Man"

When I prepare for a workshop I give, I often find that my thoughts turn to poetry. Not exactly sure why; it just happens that way. At the recent Everyday Abundance workshop, I shared a number of personal poems that address the relationship between happiness and abundance. Here is one of them. It is called “A Rich Man.” I hope you enjoy it.

A rich man
does not think about
money
much.

And yet, he knows the
price of
every
thing.

A rich man
is someone who is willing
to invest everything
he has
in love.

Love is a bond that grows,
no matter what the
economy is
doing.

A rich man
will forgive everyone
no matter what it
costs him.

He will gladly give up
all of the grievances and
resentments that his
ego gambles on.

A rich man
will sell off all of his
future investments
in an instant, if it means
he can be with
you
now.

He is interested only in the
gift of the present.
And he is happy to leave
the future and the past
right where they are.

A rich man
has learned to appreciate
what is here,
in his life,
right here.

He is rich in gratitude,
and he has discovered
that what he
appreciates,
appreciates.

A rich man
knows that in a world of
front-page news,
fast-track careers,
designer clothing, and
tragic sports results,
you have to know
what is real.

A rich man
knows the true value of
everything.
He knows what is real.
His heart is set on
what lives
forever.

Everyday Abundance: Abundance is not an It!

On February 27th-28th, I facilitated a workshop on Everyday Abundance at the Columbia Hotel, London. For two days, a room full of people, who came from all walks of life, explored some big themes including definitions of real abundance, blocks to real abundance, and also what can enable greater abundance.

I put this workshop on now, in the middle of this economic recession, because I believe we are each being called to reflect on what is of real value in our lives. The workshop was a wonderful occasion, and one that I personally got a lot out of. It was full of deep realizations, rich sharings, helpful conversations, and new commitments going forward.

The Everyday Abundance workshop started with a reading by Avril Carson and Lizzie Prior of a poem I wrote called True Abundance. This poem set the tone for our workshop. Here it is:

Abundance is not an it.
It is not to be found in
a shopping basket.

Abundance is not an achievement.
You will not find it at the end
of your never-ending
to-do list.

Abundance is not a place to get to.
Your zip code will not make you
happy.

Abundance is not a competition.
You cannot have more than your
neighbour and feel truly
abundant.

Abundance is not having everything.
You can’t have everything.
Think about it.
Where would you put it all?

Abundance is not about
getting more or
having more.
First and foremost, it is about
being more.
Being more of Who you
really are.

The reason why abundance is so
desirable is that it is your
true nature.

Abundance is Who you are.
It is what you experience when you
stop depriving yourself of what
is already yours.

Valentine's Day: The Love Dedication

A few years ago a journalist interviewed me for an article on the psychology of success. At the end of a very stimulating interview, the journalist asked if I would e-mail an answer to one final question: “What is your ultimate secret to success?”

After meditating for a while on my “ultimate secret of success,” I wrote something called the “Love Dedication.” This dedication appears in my book Success Intelligence. I thought it might be a good idea to share it again today, on Valentine's Day.

Before you dedicate your life
to a person, a marriage, a family;
to a corporation, a political party,
a peace campaign;
to a religion, a revolution, a
spiritual path;
make one other dedication first.
First dedicate yourself to LOVE.
Decide to let Love be your
intention, your purpose and
your point.
And then let Love inspire you,
support you, and guide you
in every other dedication
you make thereafter.

Barack Obama - Leadership, Happiness & Success

Today, I watched, along with everyone else in the world, the inauguration of the 44th American President, Barack Obama. Ever since Mr Obama was nominated for the Democratic candidacy, he has conducted himself as a genuine and principled person. Mr Obama has inspired a level of faith and hope in people that is frankly uncommon in politicians. Today, America got a new President, and, even more importantly, the world has a new leader. Because of Mr Obama’s breadth of vision, and his abiding sense of purpose, I believe he will serve the world well. And, therefore, I wish you, Mr Obama, and your family, every success.

The day after Barack Obama won the Presidential election, Alice Walker, the Pulitzer Prise-winning author, poet and activist, wrote the President-elect an open letter. I was deeply moved by Alice Walker’s letter, and have since shared it with hundreds of people who have attended my seminars. In her letter, Alice Walker offers wise counsel to Mr Obama on the challenges of leadership and the difficult times ahead. You can read the full transcript at The Root, or, if you like, see her read the letter on Democracy NOW, a daily radio TV show.

Here, I will share an excerpt from Alice Walker’s letter, which highlights the integral relationship between personal happiness and true success. It reads:

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate. One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.

When I read these words, I felt like Alice Walker had written them for me. In my work with Success Intelligence and The Happiness Project, I have learned that, happiness creates success. In other words, when you cultivate a sense of joy inside yourself it helps you to access a whole new level of inspiration, talent, resilience, and support. Success can lead to happiness; but most of all, happiness leads to success. Psychology research backs this theory. Longitudinal studies, which follow the well-being of people over many years, show that inner happiness helps to promote career success, loving relationships, good health, financial prosperity, and a rich spiritual life. Your inner happiness is the key to authentic success.

Alice Walker goes on to talk about leadership, forgiveness, and the need to lighten and brighten our world. She finishes her open letter to Barack Obama with the words: “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” Her letter is really addressed to us all.

While Mr Obama takes his Presidential oath, and makes his acceptance speeches, let us use this occasion to reflect on how we can take a lead in our own lives. On some level, we are all world leaders, because on some level we all create the world. My prayer for today, therefore, is that we may all step forward so as to be even more of the person we came to be.

And so be it.

On OPRAH on New Year's Day

Happy New Year to YOU.

The first Oprah show of 2009 is one I appear in. It is called How Happy Are You? Oprah Winfrey and I spend 60 entertaining and enlightening minutes uncovering the real secrets to happiness. The show begins with five members of the public including Lorrie, a mother of six, and David, a funeral director, who take a unique satisfaction test to assess how happy they are. The results are surprising and revealing, with David, the funeral director, top scoring! Afterwards, I coach each of them on how to enjoy greater happiness – starting from now. You can take the happiness test and read a full report on the show now by visiting www.Oprah.com.

In a fast-paced show, Oprah and I cover many key themes including the importance of defining happiness for yourself, and also overcoming common blocks to happiness such as chasing happiness, destination addiction, and leaving yourself out of your own life. The show was seen by millions of TV viewers, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. My book Happiness NOW! was the featured book for the show, and since the broadcast it has risen on the Amazon list to #1 for books on happiness, #2 for self-help books, and into the Top 30 for books overall. The Happiness NOW audio book and perpetual flip calendar are also selling well.

There are some big messages in this Oprah show that are particularly appropriate for the start of a new year. Perhaps the main one is that it is never too late to be happy. One of the key lessons I have learned in my inquiry into happiness is that ALL of the blocks to happiness exist in the past. Anybody who has ever had a past – and that includes you and me - has experienced disappointment, regret, fatigue, wounds, and some unhappiness. The key to enjoying greater happiness now is to learn from the past, but not to let yourself get stuck in the past. Each new present moment is an invitation to begin again and to remember the truth of who you are and what true happiness is.

With that thought in mind, here is an excerpt from my new book Be Happy which is published by Hay House in the US in April 2009.

It is never too late to really be here.
It is never too late to enjoy the moment.
It is never too late to love and be loved.
It is never too late to know the truth.
It is never too late to heal an old wound.
It is never too late to feel the oneness.
It is never too late to let yourself be helped.
It is never too late to be wholly grateful.
It is never too late to be innocent again.
It is never too late to be who you
really are.
